Concept Art

A collection of my original concept art for Space Whales. Ahem—I am not a concept artist by any means but I tried my best :)

First pass sketches of the main character. To minimise hair simulation, I decided to put her hair up in a bun. The name ‘Rhea’ is a placeholder until we decide on something.

Second and third passes of the main character. We have settled on sort of a mash up of the two: the character on the left with the jacket on the right. We want her to look functional and tough, but not too “gussied” up.

First pass of the planet’s fishing village huts. Our original setting was to take place on a marshy, wet planet (hence the elevated homes) but we have since evolved. Feedback from our professors told us that this design feels too “worldly,” which makes it difficult to believe that the village is set on a foreign planet. However, we have decided to keep the stacked nature of the houses.

Since evolving to the Ha Long Bay-inspired environment, we decided the homes need to carved into the side of a rock cliff. These primitive dwellings allow the village to be directly integrated with the terrain. Like the stacked huts in the first …

Since evolving to the Ha Long Bay-inspired environment, we decided the homes need to carved into the side of a rock cliff. These primitive dwellings allow the village to be directly integrated with the terrain. Like the stacked huts in the first pass, these houses are stacked up and down along the sides of rocky cliffs to give our environment lots of height variation.
